Is your test in the wilderness or in the promised land?

Read Deuteronomy 1 through Deuteronomy 8.

You've heard a lot about the tests and trials that God uses to help His people mature spiritually. Most sermons talk about the bad things as your test. What if your test is how you deal with the good life? In the book of Deuteronomy, Moses talks to the Hebrews who are about to enter the promised land. He reminds them of their wanderings in the wilderness for forty years and how God provided their food, shelter and protection. Moses tells them of the abundance they are about to experience in the promised land. And, Moses gives them advice on where to focus once they are in the promised land.

Deuteronomy 6:10-11 The Lord your God will soon bring you into the land He swore to give you when He made a vow to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is a land with large, prosperous cities that you did not build. The houses will be richly stocked with goods you did not produce. You will draw water from cisterns you did not dig, and you will eat from vineyards and olive trees you did not plant.

Deuteronomy 8:10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, be sure to bless and praise the LORD your God.

Deuteronomy 5:33 Stay on the path that the Lord your God has commanded you to follow. Then you will live long and prosperous lives in the land you are about to enter and occupy.

Deuteronomy 1:17 You must not show partiality in judgment—you must hear the small and the great alike.

Deuteronomy 4:19 When you look up into the sky and see the sun, moon, and stars—all the forces of heaven—don’t be seduced into worshiping them. The Lord your God set them out for everybody’s benefit, everywhere.

Deuteronomy 4:16-17 Do not corrupt yourselves by making an idol in any form, not like a man or a woman, or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below.

Deuteronomy 4:39 Remember this and keep it firmly in mind: The Lord is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other.
